From regulatory agency to service provider
TÜV SÜD Group's history can be traced back to the first steam boiler inspection association, which was established as a private regulatory agency by steam boiler operators in Mannheim in 1866. The purpose of the regulatory agency is to "protect people, the environment and property from the risks of related technologies." In the following years, similar associations sprang up in all the industrial centers of Germany, in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse and Saxony. In Bavaria, for example, Bayerischer Dampfkessel-Revisions-Verein was founded.
These associations (which gradually evolved into subsidiaries of TÜV SÜD after mergers) gradually expanded their business areas in the context of technological development, adding areas such as electricity, automobiles, fire safety, power stations, passenger lifts, ropeways, nuclear power plants, environmental protection, product safety and management systems.
Over the past decades, TÜV SÜD has been internationalizing rapidly in the European single market, North America and Asia-Pacific. Today, TÜV SÜD is a global technical service provider.
Testing and product certification
TÜV SÜD offers standards and directives supported by leading quality and safety marks. For example, the US Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) mark, as well as the European Community's CE mark and GS mark. TÜV SÜD also issues the TÜV SÜD product certification mark based on international certification mark requirements. TÜV SÜD tests more than 15 million vehicles every year.
